WELL, WELL, WELL is a collaborative project between Diana Gheorghiu and Alina Lupu.
Both Gheorghiu and Lupu are born in Romania, and have studied and are currently living and working as artists in the Netherlands. The project was born as a critique towards the wellness industry and the latest trends in self care and wellbeing, along with the increasing demands these place on the individual. The design of the work is made to replicate Formula As, the well known Romanian magazine dedicated to women. The magazine is taken as a starting point for visual reflection due to the parallels that can be drawn between its ethos and Western platforms dedicated to wellness such as Goop. Formula As can be seen in that sense as the gateway to Gwyneth Paltrow’s sanctuary. Though the audience of the two are different, the aim is shared: constant improvement, fixing the body and the mind, optimising the self.
Diana Gheorghiu is a Romanian artist (b. 1985) living and working in The Hague, The Netherlands. In her practice she is exploring the relationship between our digital self and physical self. Central to her work is the female body and how it is often reduced to its biological, vital processes. This disembodiment frames her critique on today’s obsession with healthy lifestyles and the growing wellness industry. Her starting point is deeply analytical and critical, but she ends up approaching her subjects in a playful and humorous way.
Alina Lupu, born 1985 in Romania, and currently living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is a post-conceptual artist and writer. She has a background in psychology, photography and an incomplete education in fine arts. Earlier this year she released a publication entitled “This is a Work of Fiction”. The novella goes through real and imagined situations touching upon the fragility of the artistic profession and the many compromises that one is subjected to along the way when embarking on it. Her work has infiltrated: W139, Amsterdam; Onomatopee, Eindhoven; Drugo More, Rijeka; Rheum Room, Basel; European Lab, Lyon and Diskurs, Giessen, among others.
